A semazen is a person who performs the sema, a whirling ritual associated with the Mevlevi Order. Semazenism, based on the teachings of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi, involves the ritualistic spinning ceremony known as sema.

 

The dance of the semazen, or sema, consists of symbolic movements:

 

Opening of the Arms and Head: The semazen's head is turned to the right, signifying "we come from God." With arms open, the semazen acknowledges receiving divine beneficence and accepting the mission to spread it on Earth.

Right Hand Up, Left Hand Down: The right hand raised upwards signifies the semazen's acceptance of the divine gift and willingness to disseminate it on Earth. The left hand symbolizes the transmission of this beneficence onto the world.

Whirling Movement: Semazen whirls on their right foot. This turning signifies the ascent of the semazen's soul towards God, striving for divine love and attaining true knowledge.

Hand Gesture: While whirling, the semazen keeps their right hand at chest level and the left hand turned downwards, symbolizing the journey towards union with God and the attainment of divine love.
